refined selector and esteemed producer, steve braiden breaks out on his own with the off out label after some excellent releases for the likes of rush hour and joy orbison s now defunct doldrums label. its a good day when there is some new braiden productions to soak up, and hopefully the establishment of off out will see them appear with more regularity in the future. as an opening statement, apex of the sun s way is a powerful one indeed! the title track is characterised by the sort of rhythmic poise we have come to expect from a braiden production, with searing emotive textures rubbing up against some of the crispest drums heard this year. - solar poise- is equally memorable, with strange ghostly vocals trapped deep in the mix and an unpredictable synth careening around the channels.

three is the number between two and four. three pulses that occur at equal time intervals, make the third pulse predictable. mike published therefore his third album under the title -drei- on his own label wall music limited as two separate vinyl releases.

opening the release is title track trudge , a hypnotic mood-driven composition with an ever-blooming feel throughout its nine-minute duration. traumer employs dusty percussive sounds and a weighty kick drum to create the bumpy groove, while warbling bass licks, menacing synth hooks and processed vocals are layered up to create an intricate progressive feel. following is underlying which takes a different route, this time going into deeper realms with floaty pad lines, jangling rhythms and rumbling sub tones, while classic dub techno stabs are thrown into the mix to create a gritty and understated composition.

polluted system is a track suitable for the main room, the energy of the kick and the bass leave no respite from start to finish as a joint of metal percussion and synths fit gradually to fill the sound spectrum of this track. becomes human machine in a few minutes, using acid and industrial sounds, conveys the idea of the change that is happening around us: people are becoming more and more machines, and this is the soundtrack of the mutation. unlocked human, while remaining in acid and mechanical territories, thanks to a groove of more organic toms and hi hat still let the human element glimpse, not yet deleted by the machines, all accompanied by a relentless kick which makes it a perfect tool from the dancefloor . no system, which give the title to the ep, ends this sequence with dreamy and futuristic atmospheres, the ruling part is still a simple but instantly recognizable acid bass, over breakbeat-oriented rhythmics.

for a long time, vidal benjamin has been getting up early at the weekends. whether alone or in company, he digs his hands into various crates at record fairs, flea markets or in empty attics, to uncover records that have long been forgotten, ignored or even despised. among the small circle of parisian diggers, his reputation precedes him: it is he who finds and it is he who shares. it is not unusual that in his wake, one finds a certain record long lost, left behind as a special gift from vidal. he likes to share so that others may discover. and it is for that same reason that he regularly sleeps late, playing records in clubs at night, where he follows a similar path: altruistic, educational and festive. it’s no surprise, then, that his first compilation goes by the fitting title of disco sympathie.

that future starts right here with the release of the check point ep and a title track that thunders straight out of the blocks with its steamroller kick drum and mighty bass synth. wade then strips things back, rolling out pulsing bass and percussive vibes on dark shadows before dropping more imperious drum work as he closes the ep with sunday in the sky.

r002 sees a long-time jaunt favourite deepa & biri, take centre stage. the israeli duo have long been considered expert producers by those in the know, with releases on the likes of gigilo, transmat and their own black crow imprint very much indicative of the fact. the basement cuts ep, meanwhile, goes some way to solidifying this fledgling reputation. full of psychoactive tendencies and brimming with otherworldly sounds, the title track sees the pair delve deep, as they summon up a cut thats notable for its obsessive eye for detail and an unfurling array of captivating sounds.

three is the number, basement toolz the titel. once again rat life records is taking mickey on a night out to the sewer. here are two tracks made by credit 00 with a borrowed tr 909 drum machine. side a is called korg the groove, as the title already reveals, its inspired by a classic detroit techno cut. can you tell which one it is? on the flip side you will find 909ish, one drum machine and one synthesizer, which is not much but all you need and more, plus there is extra noise on the clap to amplify your face slapping pleasure.

the title track crystal city shows a real understanding of the techno aesthetic, combining cathedral like atmospherics with rough, raw and rugged drums. the italian tape saturation master steve murphy (lobster theremin/chiwax/wilson) is employed to remix the title track. murphy brings the track back in to the realms of house and sprinkles it with his analogue know how to turn in a sub rumbling interpretation

following on from her highly acclaimed ett lp on editions mego klara lewis presents 4 new works which further her signature explorations of field recordings, electronics, rhythm, sound and atmosphere. here lewis exemplifies her uncanny ability to harness the world outside in order to reconstruct and re-present this as amorphous musical matter. these 4 new tracks exude a certain ambiguity where standard signposts such as rhythm, ambience, texture, light and dark remain as elusive as they are present. whilst bypassing passive or photographic representation of the source material these works withhold a strong emotional quality resulting in a confident and at times brutal musical manifestation. as suggested by the title, msuic resides in a zone at once familiar and slightly off kilter, a world of lewis devising in which the listener is warmly encouraged to enter and explore. msuic is another superb collection of music as fantastic matter.

a lot of water has passed under the bridge since the release of etienne jaumet’s night music, dating from october 2009. his hypnotizing music and enchanting live performances put him directly on the map. it’s just him who is in control of his ship. he moves without complexes from his saxophone to his drum machine (his beloved tr 808) while turning knobs modulating synths, and sending his voice through an echo.la visite, etienne’s brand new album, more luminous and jazzy than its predecessor, has been composed and produced within a two month period in the versatile studio. it became a piece of introspection, mentally as well as physically. in the title track, for which flop wrote the text, we hear etienne travelling through the inside of a body, fantastic voyage style.it is always surprising to see a record taking shape. etienne would arrive at the studio without any precise idea in head, approaching his work rather intuitively. he works standing up, which brings a very different energy than being seated behind a computer polishing up every detail. he is in total mastery of his set-up, ready to capture that short-lived moment of true creation. the only use a computer has for him, is to record his experiments - afterwards being mixed by jerome caron (blackjoy).in between night music and la visite, etienne has not been lazy. not only has he done numerous collaborations (amongst others with joakim, richard pinhas, francois & the atlas mountain) and picked up djing, he has also recorded a new zombie zombie album (rituels d’un nouveau monde) with cosmic neman, as well as the soundtrack loubia hamra. and he worked with artist felicie d estienne d orves on the installation satori. at this very moment, etienne and his saxophone are still part of the tour of james holden.

this e.p. sets out to honor to spring wherever and when it may happen. it arrived early for our location the year it was first created. *furuike ya - ancient pond* was the original title. this is taken from an ancient haiku by matsuo basho. the remix for *ancient pond* was created by jason drummond (aka dj spun) from rong music nyc. this rework of the original adds a funky twist to the beats and bass line. *electric sheep* is taken from the philip k dick book including this portion its title. the theme of this track hints on the nature of our creations and the future possibilities. this particular version contains only the 303 melodies/elements of the original, which is set to be released in the next ep to follow. pressing on transparent, blue colored vinyl.

from the tropics comes whiskey disco, a sneaky re-edit label bent on dredging the decanter for diffident dancefloor genius from latent disco perpetrators. it is loosely connected to sleazy mcqueen and his assorted cohorts.
oslo-based, icelandic producer, b.g. baarregaard, returns to whiskey disco for his third solo ep, disco inn. the title song features a talented roster of icelandic-via-oslo musicians. inga Þyri coos blissful harmonies atop a deep groove comprised of electric guitar chucks by sigurður guðmundsson and organ and bass by baarregaard. this deep groove will work those balearic moments to-a-tee. on the reverse, undercover lover exposes rnb style vocals, delayed claps and bass groove on the outside cut and country style guitar sitting comfortably next to 303 acid on the inside for kaffibarinn, an homage to the legendary reykjavik music venue.

asoks scenery imprint continues to go from strength to strength, with the boss man following up bantam lions recent recollections ep with a single of his own. hunter is undoubtedly the liverpool-based producer s strongest track yet, with woozy, soft-focus chords and alien electronics riding a dusty, analogue-rich groove. as with much of the labels recent output, there are distinct hints of mood hut, future times and mister saturday night. experienced producer versalife reworks the title track, turning it into a blissful chunk of drexciya-style electro. flip to the b-side for cabal, an ultra-deep and occasionally discordant concoction, and the fuzzy, detroit-influenced bounce of millennium 2.2.

avian s 16th release is coming from alessandro cortini under the name skarn. best known for his work with trent reznor both in nine inch nails and how to destroy angels, the italian producer just recently made his debut on hospital productions with the hugely acclaimed * sonno* lp. his new project skarn sees cortini take a turn into more technoid driving soundscapes, which makes shifteds avian label the perfect fit for it. the ep features three tube driven noise workouts with a precise minimalism and a hypnotic drum pattern, which leads the way through the release.
